If You Need A Social Security Card, Here Is What You Need To Do

Everyone needs a social security card. It is a card that is very important to keep track of. You never know what situation you may find yourself in where you might have to present it. A job interview is a perfect example. It would be nice if all you had to do is simply tell someone whatever they needed to know, but we live in a world where word of mouth doesn’t always work. Just about everything you apply for online, ask for a social security number. But, when you are dealing with people in person, they want to see identification with a picture on it along with your card.

Social security numbers at one time were supposedly issued out to keep track of United States citizens, but now it is being used for other purposes including taxation. On tax forms, your social security number is asked to be filled in and for some people, all they have to do is write it down immediately. These are people who have memorized their social security numbers due to the fact that they use it a lot or they took the time out to memorize it so they don’t have to carry it with them all the time or encase they lose it.

But, some people don’t take the time out to memorize their numbers and have to pull out their cards all the time so they carry it with them wherever they go. These are people who are at risk of misplacing their Social Security cards. I, myself have had to get a replacement on a few occasions. Once on the bus, my wallet was taken from my pocket, and another time I misplaced it along with my birth certificate, somewhere in the house. That one I found eventually with time. But, not in time for when I needed it. I also had to get a new card once when my wife had laminated my card after I told her laminated cards were no longer being accepted by anyone.

Back when I had to get a replacement social security card, there were no online sites you could go to and replace your card. You had to go to the social security administration office and apply in person with the documents that were required in order for you to get a new card. Not to mention, you had to stand on a long line because you were not alone with losing your card in whatever borough you lived in. The good thing about it was that they are free and you can now apply for a replacement card online.

I wish the social security administration office had online services when I was replacing my cards. It seems to be a lot easier and more convenient to apply online for a card. Nowadays, just about everyone has internet service in their homes or has access to it. So, getting a new card when you have to, should not be a problem for anyone. All you need in order to apply is a mailing address and one of the following:

  • U.S. Driver’s License
  • State Issued Non-Driver Identification Card
  • U.S. Passport

When you apply for one in person at a social security administration office, you will be asked to show documented proof to prove who you are along with proving you are a citizen of the United States. You will need to show one or more of these to whoever is assisting you in getting your replacement card:

  • U.S. Driver’s License
  • State Issued Non-Driver Identification Card
  • Employee ID Card
  • School ID Card
  • Health Insurance ID Card
  • U.S. Military ID Card

There are Social Security offices in every state. You can find the closest office location near you by going online and entering your zip code into the Social Security office location on their website. Or, you can if possible, apply for your replacement card while you are already online. Although you can find a social security administration office located in every state, there are states that are not allowing people to apply for their replacement cards online such as:

  • Alabama
  • Minnesota
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • West Virginia

Knowing how to replace your social security card is very important. If you were to lose your card or if it were to be stolen, you should know what steps to take in order to get another card and the best way to go about it. You should also keep in mind if your card was stolen, you might want to report it to the proper authorities like the police and the Internal Revenue Service(IRS). There are people out there who commit crimes using other people’s identities, and using someone’s social security number plays a huge role in their plans to commit fraud.

No matter how you apply to receive your replacement social security card, it doesn’t take long to receive in the mail. But, the quickest way you can get your replacement card is to go to your local Social Security office in person. It takes as little as five minutes to process your request and your card could be mailed to you within two weeks. To make it easier, you can download and fill out an SS-5 form and take it down to your nearest social security administration office instead of waiting till you get to the office and fill it out there.

Whether you go online to get your security card replacement or to the social security administration office in person, be sure to get your card as soon as you notice your card missing. If you haven’t memorized your social security number before, be sure you do when you get yours in the mail. There are times like filling out applications where all you need is your number and not the presence of your card. Also, be sure to put your card in a safe place. Even though the process of replacing your card isn’t unpleasant, the thought of being without one is.
