People have a wide range of emotions, but not all of them are pleasant. No one likes to feel anger, anxiety, sadness, or envy when we have a quarrel with a friend or suffer from a lack of information. But fortunately, we can regulate and control our emotions so that they do not control us or negatively affect us.
Here are five negative emotions that we can learn to use to our advantage.
Anger often arises from feelings of injustice. Younger people are more prone to this emotion, and it diminishes a bit with age. Anger can be channeled in a positive way by asking yourself if what makes you angry is unfair. If it is, then it is worth thinking about what you can do to fix it. Chances are, while you think, the anger will subside, and you will decide whether you want to fix the injustice that worries you so that the next time it does not turn into an angry Hulk. If you can fix it, there is less reason to be angry.
Anxiety and worry accompany a lot of people. These emotions often make us nervous and afraid of everything. If you are often anxious, the first thing to do is to find the cause of this condition. Perhaps, anxiety is connected with the fear of losing a job, getting sick, quarrels with loved ones, and so on. Such anxiety about the future can be demanding, but it may also encourage you to make positive changes in your life. For example, you may decide to upgrade your skills so that you don’t have to worry about your job, or get a doctor’s checkup so that you can worry less about your health.
Envy is a rather complex emotion, but oddly enough, it is a useful one. It often helps us to understand what we want. So if you are jealous of your classmate who bought a Bentley, it is likely that you also want a similar car and also believe that you deserve to drive such a car no less than a classmate. Try to turn envy in your favor: think about what you really want and find a way to achieve your goal. Most importantly, do not look for reasons why you cannot change anything, try to think about the possibilities.
Many people feel guilty without any reason. Often it is connected with the fact that a person does not take care of himself badly and puts on his shoulders too much responsibility. Remember to empathize and help not only other people but also yourself. If you feel roundly guilty, give yourself time to rest and rethink your daily activities so that instead of feeling guilty there is a relaxed and good attitude towards yourself and your time.
If you often feel ashamed, it’s a reason to think about how we perceive ourselves. We often over-exaggerate our shortcomings, and when they show up in front of other people, we become ashamed. This is certainly unpleasant. So it is worth working on your self-esteem. If possible, it is better to do it with a good psychologist.
