Having a pet in your apartment is one of the most exciting things you can do. Of course, we all want the fun of having a furry friend we can care for and love while getting to enjoy the strings-free style of living that apartments offer, but it’s not all perfect moments.

These are some of the top pros and cons of having a pet in your apartment and why it may or may not be the best choice for you.

You Have a Built-In Friend

This can seem silly, but having a pet means you have a built-in friend to spend time with. Unfortunately, an overwhelming number of people admit to feeling lonely while living in an apartment.  Sometimes it’s because of the small space or flat, other times it’s because of how isolating it can be to know none of your neighbors. If you have a pet, you have a built-in friend!  Although you can’t take them to most wine mixers or movies, a pet can go on walks with you and can enjoy your companionship as much as you want theirs!

They’re an Added Cost

Pets are prohibitively expensive to care for when you’re in an apartment.  From the price of a pet deposit, which is usually a couple of hundred dollars and nonrefundable, to the expense of fifty to a hundred dollar pet rent, that’s also changed – you’re paying a lot to keep your pets.

On top of the apartment cost, there’s the cost of their vaccination, getting your pet fixed, and ensuring that it receives the care it deserves from veterinarians.  Failing to do so can be detrimental to the pets’ health, which means you could pay even higher vet bills while also worrying about the wellbeing of your animal.

They’re Good for Mental and Physical Health

Pets are fantastic for our mental and physical health.  Most pets encourage people to release serotonin, making us feel happier and more excited to make it through our day.  Pets that need walks, or for us to accompany them outside, are great because it forces us into motion and out in the open.  People with pets get to feel more in control of their living situation and often get into better mental and physical health.

They May Chain You to Your Apartment

Unfortunately, if you have a dog or a needy cat, you may have noticed how difficult it is to leave them home alone.   With dogs especially, going them in an enclosed space is a risk many pet owners don’t want to take. So instead, they have to schedule their days around walking their dog or hire someone who can come in and take the dog for a walk when they’re away.  This can be expensive and can hold people back from doing many things they want to do.

Some Apartments Will Evict Over Pets

If you’re in more strict Glendale apartments, you may realize that your complex doesn’t allow pets whatsoever.  If that’s your case, don’t try to get a pet anyways.  Some apartment complexes have the right to evict over pet ownership, and many still follow through with this.  Don’t become homeless over a new animal.
